How To Avoid Problems When Wearing Contacts

About Me
Vision after Forty

Hello. My name is Lori Frank. I’m fifty-two years old. I had perfect vision until I turned forty-one years of age. It’s funny; you often hear how one's vision starts to change at forty. Well, I can tell you that statement sure has held true for not only me but friends and family too. I never worried about going for yearly eye exams until I noticed that it was getting harder to read road signs when driving. I got my first pair of glasses when I was forty-one, and I’ve been averaging a new prescription at least every other year since. I want to share some of my experiences when it comes to eye exams. I was frightened and wanted to put it off, but there’s really nothing to be afraid of. Moreover, to make things better, eyeglasses are a trend these days!

How To Avoid Problems When Wearing Contacts

If you have problems with your vision and you have decided to go with contact lenses then you should familiarize yourself with the things you should avoid doing that can irritate your eyes when you are wearing them or damage the contacts. This article is full of information that will give you a clear understanding on how you can have a better experience with contacts.

Avoid fumes and smoke

When you have contacts in your eyes, your eyes can be more sensitive to things in the air. Fumes, such as those that come from spray paint cans, can cause the contacts to become dried out in your eyes. Smoke can cause your eyes to itch and this feeling can be made worse when you have contacts in. Other things in the air such as an excessive amount of dust or pollen can also irritate your eyes more when you are wearing contacts.

Always wash and rinse your hands

It's extremely important for you to always wash your hands and rinse all the soap off thoroughly before you touch your contact lenses. If you put the contacts in your eye with dirty hands then small particles can get trapped between the lens and your eye; this can cause a great deal of discomfort and may even scratch your eye.

Don't shower with contacts in

Even if you plan on closing your eyes while you wash your face and hair, wearing contacts in the shower is a very bad idea. If you do happen to get soap or shampoo in your eyes it can become trapped in the lenses and really hurt. Also, the water makes it easy for them to come out of your eyes. If you lose one in your shower then the chances of finding it will be very hard and it will go down the drain.

Don't wear your contacts too long

If you are in the position of needing to stay awake for an exceptionally long period of time to finish work or for another reason, you should give your eyes a break from the contacts. Wearing them when your eyes are strained and/or tired can make your eyes more irritated and itchy. If you excessively rub your eyes, the contacts can pop out or get damaged.

Now that you have an idea of things you can do to avoid problems or irritation with contacts, you will have a better chance of wearing them comfortably. Contact a local eye doctor, such as Kennedy Eye Clinic, for further assistance.
